Samantha
and her sister Daisy were born to a feral mother who moved the
babies into our garden at about nine weeks. They were very cute, but
very nervous, and we could not get close to them. They did allow us to
feed them though, although their mother would watch us suspiciously the
whole time. If the kittens got too close to us she would swat them back
with a deadly paw.
It took us quite a few months, but we did manage to trap them all and
introduce them to our vet. Originally we thought that our Sam was a boy
because she was a lot bigger than Daisy and was constantly pouncing at
her and generally trying to wind her up, but a visit to the vet
confirmed that she was a girl and Samantha she became.
In due course Samantha took over from her mother as "top cat," a
position she enjoys to this day. She does not have quite the same
intensity as when she was younger, but she does still work at
maintaining her alpha status. She believes that this position gives her
special privileges such as sole access to her daddy's lap and she makes
sure that she takes full advantage of this perk.
Our lovely girl has come a very long way from the nervous kitten we
first met, and she continues to learn new skills. Within the last year
she has found her voice, and now lets us know what she thinks on a range
of issues from an empty food bowl to feline intruders in her garden. We
hope that Samantha stays healthy and happy for many years to come.
