Diego
came into our lives nearly one year ago when we adopted him from a
local shelter. We were immediately drawn to him because he has extra
toes on his front paws, giving him what looks like human thumbs. Once
we brought him home, we fell deeply in love with him for many other
reasons. He is incredibly loving, stands guard over us at night, and
waits by the door when one of us leaves.
Diego is a very active cat and runs laps around our apartment, jumps up
on cabinets, hangs upside down from closet hangers, and has even opened
our freezer more than once! He is a constant source of entertainment.
He is incredibly friendly and always greets us at the front door when we
come home. When you ask him if he wants to "show off," he immediately
falls to the ground and exposes his belly for a belly rub. He will do
this without any prompting as well if he wants attention. We have
taught him to play catch and fetch (like a dog), and he does very well
with both of these games, largely due to his thumbs. He is currently
trying to master opening doors, although all he can do right now is grab
the doorknob and meow for further assistance.
Recently we got two kittens, and he welcomed them into our home as if
they were his own children! He taught them to do "cat things" like use
the litter box and clean themselves, and regularly cuddles with them and
grooms them. Many times on days when I am home, I find them all in my
bed, with the kittens lying on top of Diego while he holds them with his
front legs. He even converses with them, meowing back and forth with
them for several minutes at a time. Diego is truly a wonderful cat and
we are thankful every day that he has come into our lives!
