This
is my cat Mango, with his back paw up. He had been scratching himself
right before I took the photo, and it looks like he's waving!
Mango is special because he's the most well-traveled cat I know. He was born
two and a half years ago in Beijing, China, where a friend of mine found him
as a stray. He was eventually brought to Toronto, Canada for a few months and
now lives in Montreal, Quebec, Canada with me.
Mango does not have a distinct breed name, but cats with his type of facial
features and thick fur are known colloquially in parts of China as something
that translates roughly to "Chinese Winter Cats." Needless to say, he loves
the cold in Montreal! His mother or father (or both) were likely brought to
Beijing from a rural, mountainous area in Northern China, near Siberia, where
CWCs are more typically found. CWCs are also known for being very vocal, and
Mango is no exception! Mango will often greet the occupants of a room upon
entering and even seems to carry on full conversations with people with his
meows. We like to speculate that Mango is really a wise Chinese philosopher
in a cat's body and is really posing us questions in the Socratic Method when
he talks.
Mango is extremely affectionate to humans and to other cats and will
immediately assume the role of "caretaker" when introduced to another pet.
Drinking water out of bowls is not really his style, as he prefers to be
left alone in a room with the sink gently running - his own personal water
fountain! He is unique!
