This
is a picture of Kia. She is clearly a tabby (probably a mackerel) but
because she was a stray we cannot be sure what breed she is. Kia came to us by
hiding underneath our Kia van and was reluctant to come out, forcing me to
walk to work instead of taking our van. She was still there later in the day,
and the rest is history. We took her to a veterinarian who estimated that she
was only nine weeks old at the time. Imagine looking underneath our van at a
face like that and doing anything but taking her home?
Kia was naturally a very frightened little kitty when she was hiding
underneath our van. When we first tried to coax her from underneath the van,
she would get closer but then back away. This went on for over an hour and
she was meowing constantly and our hearts went out to her. Finally, I noticed
that she responded to my 'meows.' I meowed from inside our house with the
door open, and she walked right in! The neighbors surely must have thought
my wife and I had gone over the edge when we were sitting on our driveway
throughout this process, meowing away at a kitty that could not be seen from
the road!
Kia had a bit of a cold when she came inside, so we poured a hot bath to build
up some steam in our bathroom. We were hoping that the steam would help her
breathing, which it did. We brought her to the vet the next day and the vet
gave us medicine for her cold, and also for the ear mites which she had. The
poor little thing weighed barely two pounds, but she was very friendly and
seemed quite happy to receive our hugs and attention! She was a very good
patient and took her medicine very well! (Well, maybe not that well for the
ear drops, but nobody likes those, do they?)
Shortly after we adopted Kia, (or she adopted us), I was traveling to Montreal
on business. I had to borrow a friend's cell phone so I could call back and
make sure my kitty was doing okay with her medicine!
Kia has been with us for a few months now, and like all kittens has found that
she enjoys scratching and biting lots of things - sometimes furniture and
sometimes members of our family. I have experienced the joy of the 'Kia alarm
clock' when she'll pounce on my head in the middle of the night to get my
attention. She is usually purring throughout this process, so it's a loving
kind of pounce.
Kia is primarily an independent cat, but when she wants attention she'll
certainly let you know. Her most affectionate times are normally between 3am
and 5am. She's lucky that she's such a nice cat or the lack of sleep would
begin to wear on us!
Kia enjoys all of her various toys, but her favorite is a knitted toy that
looks like a jalapeno pepper at the end of a string! My children will run
around the house with Kia trailing behind. Once she catches the jalapeno, she
rapidly loses interest - it's the chase that matters!
We love our kitty very much!
