Luna
and her three brothers and two sisters were born to a stray cat
living outside of our apartment. Already owning two great cats from the
animal shelter, we didn't expect to own any more cats anytime soon, but we
brought all of the kittens into our home. In the process of trying to
catch the stray mother cat to get her spayed, we caught four adult cats
and had them neutered and found homes for sixteen additional kittens.
Luna, who gets her name because she looks like the moon in the night sky,
is a little spitfire of a cat. She was the most difficult kitten to catch,
as she climbed a tree at six weeks old to escape us. When my fiancé climbed
the tree after her, she bit him and held on the whole way home. She was
the runt of the litter and would let out the funniest growling noises when
she ate to warn her brothers and sisters to stay away from her food. Now
that she is grown up, she has a meek little meow and loves to cuddle with
our older, one-eyed cat from the animal shelter.
Luna makes me smile every time I look at her little mustache peaking out
at me from inside the bathtub or a box, her preferred hiding spots. Her
favorite thing to do is to wait until I am halfway-up the stairs and then
run as fast as she can behind me and climb up her ten foot cat tower so
you can just barely reach her and give her some pets or play with her
rope. Luna has the softest fur and has the most white areas on her coat,
more than any of her brothers and sisters, who are mostly black, which
makes our little girl very special. Whether she's playing with her jingly
mice, or perched up high on her tower, I am thankful that we kept Luna in
our lives. I can't imagine a day without our little Groucho Marx look-alike.
