What makes our pet special? Everything! But seriously, one thing that makes Eliot specifically special is how he came to live with us. One very cold evening we were sitting in the living room and talking. We looked out the window to see this pair of luminous yellow eyes intently staring at us through the glass. We went outside and found him sitting on the lounge on our front porch. When he saw us, he rolled over on his back and he let us pet him for as long as we wanted. We presumed he lived somewhere and let him be for the night.

The next night, when it was even colder, he stared at us through the window again so we let him into the house. We were worried his little white paws would freeze! When we opened the door, he marched right in and moved through the house like he'd lived there for years. We even gave him the option of going back outside but he refused. He had already made up his mind where he wanted to live!

We put him up for the night after making sure he'd be separate from our two established cats. The next day we took him to the neighborhood vet who checked him out and pronounced him healthy. We kept him in his separate room for a few days. The vet we had visited had offered to take him to a kitten rescue farm where he could live out his days. Since we already had two cats we considered that route and agonized over it. Then, when it was time to give him up to the vet we couldn't do it! Teary eyed, we told the vet we'd decided to keep him after all. They weren't surprised.

We think he came looking for us (and our two other cats) and we're so happy to have him. He's playful and cheerful and affectionate, but definitely his own cat. He will use anything as a toy: rocks, bottle caps, actual cat toys. He joyfully paws them across any room. In the year since, he's never made a single attempt to get out of the house.

We are so happy to have rescued Eliot, though as we say we didn't really have a choice. We see too many cats with frost damaged ear and even tails at cat adoption events and it's too sad to a fate even ponder for him.
