The
Fourth of July is also known as Spin-dependence Day at my house. On July 4th
many years ago, we were out driving and came across a stray cat that had just
been hit by a car. He was half-sitting, half-laying in the middle of a busy
intersection looking at the cars going by. We stopped, picked him up and took
him home. He had a crushed back leg that required immediate emergency attention.
Long story short: the leg was repaired with wires and a long temporary pin that
stuck out of the top of his hip. The whole leg was wrapped in a day-glo orange
cast. Once back at our house, the cat with no name, learned to get from one room
to another by allowing the weight of his orange cast to turn him around in
circles when he stood up - like a boat with one oar. He was the Spinning Cat,
which later became just plain Spin.
Spin rules the house including two other cats - Lily and Butters - and our
shepherd mix dog Tank. Tank learned early that Spin the cat was also Spin the
alpha dog! He proven to be the most durable cat even though he has a lot of
health problems. He still occasionally runs through the house limping on his bad
leg and chases the others just to show he still is in charge.
At age eighteen, he probably doesn't have too many 4th of Julys left, so each one we
celebrate with him is a special day for us.
