Meet
Bougarabou O. Hooligan ("Bugs" for short). Isn't he just smashing debonair?
When he first showed up, he was one rowdy six-month-old stray. A dude.
He'd scamper around the wood floors in the house, on the lookout for the
next rumble, and I'd hear that rhythm. Bougarabou - the sound of a West
African drum. So that's his first name. The O. Hooligan speaks for itself.
Before Bugs, I thought I was allergic. Plus I could not imagine why
anybody would want to keep some stealthy creature only to be admired and
fed by human slaves.
What I didn't know. It's taken me a whole blog to talk about what I know
now, about the force of Nature that is Bugs.
About how he refused to go under the anesthetic to be fixed, and took a
strip off the poor vet's arm. About how he used to wake me at 4:00 am by
flipping out the switchblades, stiffening the front legs, launching, and
skidding under the covers with such force that I could be on the far side
of a queen-sized mattress and he'd still make full gory contact. About how
he strolled out the open door one day, freaked, hid under the house for
hours - induced out only by extreme patience and a plate of odoriferous
fresh mackerel donated by a kindly neighbor.
About how I've set up the Claw and Whisker Museum, with Bugs's cast-offs -
claws and whiskers, naturally. About the cat-toy yard-and-auction-sale I
was thinking about having, to shift the truckloads of fun gew-gaws he
won't touch.
About how he went mountain-climbing one day in the box room - and then,
preferring to go bare-paw instead, gave up the lucrative crampon
endorsements.
About the Awful Frog on the window-sill.
Now, 1.5 years down the road, I am so glad I get to play with this
wonderful being Bugs. As I watch him growing up, getting smarter by the
day, how glad I am that he teaches me: Human vanity is a fool's luxury.
Come visit us on our blog.
We'd love to see you Cat of The Day friends there!
