Chevy
is a lucky boy. I was walking near my house one day, and I heard
meowing coming from a neighbor's truck. I knew my neighbor didn't have any
cats, so I told him and he opened his truck hood and two yellow eyes were
staring up at us from behind the engine. We tried unsuccessfully for several
minutes to coax the kitten out, but he was scared. Finally he jumped down and
ran. He ran straight toward a nearby pond and fell into the murky, cold
water. I reached in between the reeds and blindly grabbed something, and when
I pulled my hand out, there he was, a little five-week-old kitten, covered with
algae and weeds and soaking wet. I took him home with every intention of
bringing him to the animal shelter, since I'd never had a cat in my life and
we have two dogs. But my husband said, let's try to keep him and see how it
goes. My dog groomer friend Karen came over and gave him a bath, and I took
him to the vet to get checked out, and he's been living the life of luxury
ever since! And now we love cats so much, we've adopted two more from the
shelter!
Chevy is an independent sort of guy. We call him The King because of the way
he struts around the house. When we give treats out to the others, they get
theirs on the floor, but he gets up on a dining room chair and waits for us
to bring him his treats and place them before him. He's very affectionate to
me and loves to sit on my lap when I'm working at the computer, but he won't
go to anybody else. We've decided it's because he knows I'm the one who saved
him. He gets along well with our two younger cats, German Shepherd, and
Beagle and sometimes two or three of them will be found sleeping in the same
bed. I'm glad I happened to be taking a walk that day, I can't imagine life
without Chevy!
