Meet
Ashley, our lovely black Persian with golden-green eyes. Ashley has a
thick, grey undercoat. Her coat feels very plush and she requires a lot of
grooming and daily face-washes to keep her eyes sparkling. I use clippers
to trim her coat, but I also take her to a feline "salon" for professional
grooming. I am considering having the groomer give Ashley a lion-cut
sometime, but I also enjoy petting her long fur, so I'm a bit hesitant.
After our fifteen-year-old black cat (Midnight) died in October 2010, we
soon saw Ashley featured for adoption online. She was fostered by a rescue
agency specializing in pure-breed cats, mostly Persians. Ashley was one of
a group of four Persians who were first surrendered to an animal control
facility by an individual. Then, the four cats were placed into the
specialty rescue agency in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. While being
fostered, one of the four Persians died from a disease. Two more were
adopted, leaving only the beautiful black Persian whom we adopted and
renamed Ashley.
Her medical records show that she was spayed by the pure-breed rescue
agency only one month prior to our adoption. We suspect that for the first
four years of her life, she was probably used to breed Persian kittens for
profit. We can think of no other reason to keep an adult female cat
unspayed for several years unless she was used for breeding. We also
suspect when the breeder finished using Ashley that she was sent to the
animal shelter when she no longer served a profitable purpose. Our
veterinarian also believed Ashley was repeatedly bred and said she had
probably been kept confined for breeding and didn't get much exercise.
Otherwise, she was in good health when she first came to us.
Ashley runs very fast when she chases toys. She enjoys climbing cat trees
and she likes cardboard scratchers we keep scattered around our home. Her
favorite game is playing with very large buzzard feathers we collect from
the ground of a nearby park. She will pick up a feather in her mouth and
walk around the house, meowing loudly. When she finds one of us, she will
drop the feather at our feet. She looks up at our faces and we always tell
her what a good hunter she is. We make a big fuss over receiving a feather
from Ashley, because we know she enjoys the praise. At first, my husband
didn't understand this instinctive behavior until I explained that is how
"mama" cats hunt and bring prey to kittens, meowing loudly so they know
it's feeding time. There are no more kittens in Ashley's life, but she
still likes to hunt and bring us prizes.
Ashley gets along well with our other two cats (Red Persian, Vincent; and,
Lucky, black & white shorthair) and our dog, Mona. Ashley has a very sweet
personality to match her sweet face. We really love our Ashley.
