Patchess, the Cat of the Day
Name: Patchess
Age: Fifteen years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Persian
Home: Webster, New York, USA

Patchess is a fifteen-year-old Persian who allows me to live with her in Webster, New York. She is the sweetest, most wonderful friend anyone could have.

My sister kept trying to get me to go see this "kitten" hanging around her son's trailer in the summer of 1996, when my daughter was fourteen. My nephew could not take her in because his cat refused to allow another cat into the house. I finally relented and went to see her. She was very tiny and scruffy but was obviously a tamed house cat that had been thrown out. When I picked her up, she was light as a feather and opened her mouth, but nothing came out! She had the faintest cry I had ever heard. When I looked into her beautiful golden eyes, my heart just melted and I fell in love. My daughter was beside herself wanting to take this kitten home. We took her home and took her to the vet two days later only to find out that she wasn't really a kitten. The Vet guessed her to be about 1 year old. Only then did we find out that she was a purebred Tortoiseshell Persian. About $600 later we took our "free" cat home with us (after she was spayed, flea dipped and de-wormed). Over the years, my daughter went to college and had Patchess with her. However, when my daughter moved, the apartment didn't allow cats so Patchess came back to live with me. At that time I had taken in another give-away cat who was trying my patience since she was very neurotic and needed constant attention. She has had a positive affect on Bella, the neurotic cat.

When she first came back to me, Patchess didn't remember me and would hiss at me when I would work on her fur to remove the "matties" that she gets, since her fur is so long. Now, she will come to me when she has a matt, so that I can remove it. Over the years she has become more vocal, but is still very low volume. When she was younger, her colors were a lot more vibrant. Although her colors are fading, her eyes are just as big and bright as ever.

I love this cat with all my heart and she has helped me through some rough times in life and I hope she lives forever. When I am sick or sad, she lays on my side as I lay in bed. She is truly an amazing pet, or as I say, my fur-covered child.
