This
is Vincent (a.k.a. "Red Man"). Destiny brought this stunning, joyful
boy into our home. He came into our lives unexpectedly and at an extremely
sad time for us. On March 30, 2011, my husband and I had no choice but to
euthanize our beloved, ten-year-old Cream Persian, Annabelle. Annabelle
died after a medical procedure that went dreadfully wrong. I have created
a blog in her memory and to advocate for sound veterinary practice; if
interested, please visit annabellesvoice. A week after
Annabelle's death, I discovered Vincent "doing time" in an animal control
facility about 75 miles from our home. I saw him advertised on
PetFinder.com. I was not actively searching for a new pet, but rather felt
grief-stricken over losing Annabelle and thought looking at photos of
adoptable pets may soothe my grief. I suppose my broken heart was
following the right path when my web-surfing lead me to find Vincent, who
was in desperate need of a home. According to animal control staff, he was
found wandering the city streets and a Good Samaritan brought him into the
shelter. I drove to the shelter and as soon as I saw Vincent cowering in
the tiny, steel cage, I knew he would be coming home with me. I held him
and looked into his round, golden eyes and felt love for him immediately.
He needed a bath and a comb-out, but he was perfect in every way.
Fortunately, he was in good health. I was overjoyed to bring him home,
feed him nutritious food, and offer him plenty of love and security.
He soon found his place in our home with the other two cats and our loving
Lab-mix dog, Mona. Mona was Annabelle's special friend and Mona felt a
loss when Annabelle died. No one can ever replace Annabelle, but Vincent
seems to get along well with Mona. Vincent is the most active, talkative
kitty we have ever known. He loves to sprint across the room and climb a
huge, carpeted cat "tower" that is about seven feet high. He loves all toys,
but is attracted to anything plastic that makes a crinkling sound. He
"talks" a lot and will answer you if you call his name or ask him a
question. His answers are rather lengthy: his meow usually lasts about four
seconds or longer. He truly enjoys being cuddled like an infant. As I hold
him in my arms and gaze into his eyes, the world seems magically
transformed into a peaceful place with no worries for a minute or two.
When deciding on a suitable name for our new kitty, I wanted one that was
perfect for a red-headed boy. I thought about Rory, Curry, Leo, and other
names that seemed fiery or lion-like. And then I remembered that one of my
favorite artists was a red-haired man: Vincent Van Gogh. So, that is how
Vincent got his name.
