I
picked up my cat from a private home. His Mom had already delivered one
litter and was due to be spayed. Then the little minx got "caught short"
and gave birth to four kittens. Two found forever homes and I was to
choose between Nicky and his brother. After watching the two-month-old
kitties play together, their owner in turn placed each of them in my arms.
The brother made a quick escape, but Nicky nestled in and purred like a
coffee percolator. That's when I knew he was for me. The owner ended up
keeping his brother. Taking Nicky home was extremely touching. When I
settled him in his carrier, which I'd carpeted with a bath mat so he
wouldn't be cold, Mama cat came by, stuck her nose in and I like to think
gave him some encouragement and parting words of advice. His official name
was going to be Dominick, as my co-worker noted that he looked like a
dominatrix, but Nicky has stuck.
I was a first-time pet owner and a little bit nervous with a kitten, but
with lots of advice I got past that. Now he's a big, dapper tuxedo-clad
gentleman whom people liken to a black and white panther. He helps around
the house by sitting on my clothes when I lay them out in the morning and
"ironing" them. He is also an excellent audience for my comments,
complaints, etcetera. I also do a lot of knitting and he is so
well-behaved that he does not attack or unwind balls of yarn, but sits
quietly by my side. He also likes to keep me company when I'm reading, and
when I awaken, my bedtime buddy is right there beside me.
I know 100% that adopting Nicky was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
