About
three and a half years ago, a small, kinda rough-looking little
Tuxedo cat appeared in my New Jersey neighborhood - my roommate and I named her
Sophie. Sophie was almost completely feral, wouldn't let people get near
her, but she was very appreciative of the food and fresh water we put out.
And, in due course, Sophie produced kittens, we suspect from different
fathers. She had four kittens in her litter, a soft grey dilute-calico with
some white and pale peach coloring; a grey striped tabby; a brown tabby
with large patches of orange striped tabby mixed in; and Chessie, a
handsome mackerel tabby who inherited Momma-cat Sophie's fancy white
face-mask. The one picture with the three kittens shows, left to right,
Chessie, Skye the grey tabby, and Fiona the brown/orange blend tabby.)
Other reasons for suspecting different fathers are the differences in size
and temperament in Mom and this litter of kittens. Sophie is a tiny little
eight-pound Tuxedo and the other three kittens are pretty small and kind of
shy, although very loving and affectionate, but Chessie turned into a
twenty-pound MEGA-cat, with all the power and muscle anyone could want. And he
is the sweetest big guy you'll ever meet. He happily made the move
with us to Georgia, where we now live.
Chessie will happily come knead on us in bed, purring and whirring at us,
and if he doesn't get enough of a response he will wash whatever
part of us is outside the covers- feet, hands, noses, hair, anything. He
loves to be a lap-cat, which invariably means no circulation in one or
both legs. He's great play-buddies with several other cats and really
doesn't dislike anyone- although he held a grudge against Dollie, the
golden retriever, for a couple of months after she accidentally jumped on
the bed and onto him once... but mostly he's just a big happy friendly
mackerel-tabby cat!
