We
adopted Rocky in January 2002 from PAWS (Pet Animal Welfare Society)
in Norwalk, Connecticut. He had a heartbreaking story. He was one among eighteen cats
that were rescued from an apartment. He was a scared, scrawny boy with
virtually no fur! He had contracted flea dermatitis and lost his fur.
After growing it back, he had become nervous and scared from being in
the shelter and lost it all over again. I had just recently lost my fifteen
year old cat Canfield, who was my "hand-me-down" cat from my sister who
couldn't take him with her after she got married. His loss was
devastating and a month after he was gone, I spotted Rocky on
Petfinder.com. His name at the time was "Fluffy" but it was not the
right name for a bald cat! He got the name Rocky after his tendency to
sit on his hind haunches and using his paws like a squirrel as well as
jumping up and across long distances flying a flying squirrel... so I
named him Rocky from the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" show.
I contacted the manager of PAWS to set up a time to "meet him". I had
recently been in a car accident and hurt my back... I drove an hour and a
half from Enfield, CT to Norwalk, CT to see him with the expectation
that I would have to come back another day to take him home, per the
shelter's rules. He was in a room with another cat and as I walked in,
the other cat didn't pay me any mind, but Rocky came running to the door
to see who was coming. I sat down on the floor with him and we bonded
instantly! The manager of PAWS noticed our instant connection and asked
if I wanted to take him home that day... of course I did!
I am still in contact with PAWS, and still receive their weekly
newsletters. I keep in touch with them, despite the fact that I'm now
about 1,500 miles away in Missouri.
Now, over nine years later, Rocky, formerly known as Fluffy, is a happy,
fat, furry cat. He's not to fond of his new brother dog, Lewey. But he
and his old brother Blue the dog were the best of friends. Rocky is such
a sweet boy and has the loudest purr! He was at a loss when we lost Blue
in 2008. They became a team and were known as "Rocky and Blue-winkle."
He's been a great addition to our family and I hope I have many more
years with him!
