This
furry little charmer showed up at our doorstep fifteen years ago while
we were on vacation. Our house sitter ignored her at first but finally
gave in and fed her when she wouldn't leave. My guess is that she sized
up the place and seeing that our two cats were well cared for, but
getting on in age, decided to become adopted. We have no idea of where
she came from. but was in perfect health and well-groomed. The vet
guessed her age at between one and two years. She still has the softest
fur that we, or the vet, have ever seen. We named her Ashley because of
her ash-gray coloring. Sometimes, she even answers to the name.
After becoming the lone cat, Ashley then asserted herself and made new
rules for the household. We can only comb and brush her for short
periods, she will take care of the rest, thank you. Trimming her nails
required too many band-aids, so we gave that up. However, she can be
petted, have her ears scratched and belly rubbed forever. She informs us
when it is time for bed and time to get up. And, of course, when it is
time to eat. She loves to watch me from her window shelf while I am on
the computer, frequently walking back and forth over the keyboard for
attention.
Unfortunately, she never learned to play and ignored all the toys the
previous cats had. She will box with me at times, but she will let me
know when the game is over with her sharp claws. Ashley is probably the
most demanding cat we ever had. However, all is forgiven when she
resorts to her favorite pose - head tucked under and eyes wide open.
