Smoochie
is a princess, and she never hesitates to let you know it. She
just celebrated her first birthday, although of course she scorned her
portion of birthday cake. Smoochie is a paraplegic kitty. When she was six
weeks old she was caught in a closing dresser drawer and her back was broken.
It is a mistake to judge Smoochie by her disability. There is a great deal
more to her than a pair of legs that don't work or the diapers she has to
wear. Like most modern princesses, she works hard for a living. Smoochie is
the official mascot and spokescat for West Side Cats, a cat shelter and
rescue. As spokescat, she is constantly busy appearing at events and
fundraisers, posing for pictures and starring in videos and greeting her
many fans.
As a paraplegic, caring for her is more labor-intensive than most cats. She
requires diaper changes several times a day and needs to be bathed two to three
times daily. On a regular day she gets bathed and diapered in the morning,
then she is allowed to scoot around the shelter. Her diaper is checked and
changed several times a day, if she is messy she is bathed and re-diapered.
She sleeps in a pack-and-play pen, which is changed with fresh disposable
pads and towels each evening.
Smoochie is very loved by the volunteers who own and run the shelter. She
is alternately grumpy, purr-y, playful and affectionate, all the while
being the total princess. She has her own Facebook page, aka The Smoochie Chronicles. She
also has a page on the shelter website at West Side Cats. All
of her videos are available on her shelter website cage. Please stop by and
visit her online or in person, she loves to meet her fans!
