Our
beautiful mummy cat was with us for sixteen wonderful years. She was
never an easy cat to photograph. Being possessed of a highly suspicious
nature, in most pictures she is glaring fit to break the lens. But she
really was beautiful close up.
We don't know where Jessica came from, but she raised three litters that
we know of before we managed to trap her. Several times we thought we had
her in the trap and several times she managed to escape. This was a very
streetwise cat.
Early on, Jessica would lie up the back of our garden and flick her tail
from side to side, teaching a new lot of babies those vital cat pouncing
skills. She didn't like her babies to get too close to us in those early
days and would shoot out a paw to swat them back. Jessica ruled with a rod
of iron, but she did raise a wonderful kitten. One of her girls was
Samantha, who still misses her daily wrestle with her furmum, and her big
boy is Smokey.
Eventually we did manage to entice Jessica inside. She was extremely wary
of us, but she did appreciate the heat, soft beds and human food. She has
been known to sit in the kitchen for an hour and a half watching a chicken
slowly turning brown in the oven. Bliss! She was very far from being a
lap-cat, but she co-existed comfortably with us. Slowly she stopped
running past us and even started purring to herself when we all sat in the
sitting room of an evening.
Jessica was so strong and self-reliant that it was easy to think she would
go on for ever. We know she was possibly nineteen or even twenty, and that is a good
long life. She was lucky to live with two of her babies the whole time.
They were pretty well inseparable. I genuinely believe that Jessica had a
great life, and I feel truly privileged to have given this special girl a
good home.
