Welcome
to Pixel, our gorgeous five year old Ragdoll mix. A few years ago
I decided that I wanted a long-haired, non-Persian cat to go along with
our short-haired friends. After a week of Internet adoption sites I ran
across Pixel and fell hopelessly in love with him as soon as I laid eyes on him.
He was going to be at an adoption fair a few days later, so off we went.
He was everything I hoped he would be; friendly and very fuzzy. But we
couldn't adopt him as the foster mom was not there. The staff politely
informed us that he would be at an adoption fair in 2 more weeks and no, I
could not put a hold or reserve on him.
So I chewed my fingernails for two weeks hoping he would not get an
impromptu adoption. When we got to the fair, my fears were allayed, as
there he sat in his fuzzy glory. As Pixel grew, he turned into the
long-haired guy I hoped for and a great deal more. His summer coat is very
thick, his winter coat is unreal. His eyes attract attention due to the
concentric yellow and green rings. My wife tagged him as the reversible
kitty because he is mostly gray while standing, but pure white while on
his back.
As you can see, Pixel developed a mane so huge that the bottom end of it
is essentially a big beard. At its peak in early spring it is so long that
if you pull it up you can cover his entire face up to his ears. He does
not have blue eyes but his fur, triangle nose marking and behavior are
pure Ragdoll. Pixel lives up to the Ragdoll name, derived from the way
they go dead limp when picked up. You must use two hands when picking him
up or he will fall to the floor. Pixel loves to supervise my house
projects and will follow me from floor to floor, punctuating with his
peeps and chirps. He does not have a regular meow.
Pixel's fur is dead straight, super sleek and feels like you are petting a
rabbit, not a cat. He keeps his fur in amazing condition by himself, but
he is a lap kitty delight that loves getting brushed and petted. We are
convinced that Pixel knows he is handsome by the way he preens and walks
after being brushed. He is extremely obliging about pictures.
While a kitten, Pixel thought so highly of paperwads that he would play
fetch for hours at a time. Like most cats, one day he stopped while
chasing a toss, looked at me, looked at the paperwad and never played
fetch again. I think that is actually a view into a very fundamental
behavioral difference between cats and dogs.
My wife and I will admit to being highly biased, but Pixel is the most
beautiful cat we have ever seen and we feel so lucky to have this
beautiful, personable little friend.
