Having
lived with cats since early childhood, I have had the privilege to
study these beautiful creatures at close range. Cats personify my ideal of a
"free agent". What could anyone want more than being able to enjoy, dismiss or
compromise with life entirely on their own terms?
Habu joined my household when he was a leggy kitten of seven months old. His
breeder, a pleasant soft-spoken lady, wanted nothing but the promise of "a
good home" for this unusually people-oriented cat. It took no time for Habu to
settle into my environment and grow into a remarkably good looking and good
natured fellow. Habu likes all humans equally and would quietly follow them
from room to room in case opportunities arise for a friendly pat on the back.
This open welcoming demeanour has won him many fans in the neighbourhood.
Habu's notion of friendliness does not extend to cats. Currently he is
preoccupied with seizing power from my other cat Amber. Amber is small but
mighty and, like a truly noble lady, can be incredibly stubborn and strategic
in matters concerning personal honour and social status. She never backs off
and knows exactly how to ally with humans to turn around a losing battle,
simply crying a few heart-wrenching meows. Thus, despite losing mouthfuls of
fur, Amber stays at the top. This leaves Habu wondering why his magnificent
size has not got him anywhere. No doubt one day he will figure this out and
his top cat dream will come true!
