This
is my beautiful Lydia. She passed away on May 26, 2012 after a brief
illness. She'll always live on in my heart, but I think she should be honored
for her courage and sweetness.
I first spotted Lydia in the adoption center of Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary, an
animal rescue group in Las Vegas, Nevada, for which I volunteered. She was only a
couple of months old at that time. She was a rescued feral kitten who was
still terrified of people. She would become physically ill when approached -
and forget trying to pick her up. She did, however, love to play with a
feather toy. I visited her several times after that and it seemed she was
becoming more uncomfortable every time.
After observing her a few times I told my husband I was bringing her home. I
said I didn't care if she hid under the bed the rest of her life I was going
to get her out of the adoption center. I took her home and isolated her from
my other two cats in a small bathroom. The other cats were, of course,
curious about her, and one day when I opened the door to go in to feed her,
Niles, my male cat, pushed his way in. When Lydia spotted him she leaped up
and ran to him. It was love at first sight! After that she made herself
comfortable and settled in, although we still couldn't approach her.
A year later my husband and I retired to Sheridan, Wyoming. Lydia and Niles made
the trip and loved their new home. While Lydia was still very skittish around
everyone - including us, she became part of our home. When we woke up, we
developed a routine of getting our coffee and getting back in bed to watch
the Today Show for the first hour. As long as we were in bed Lydia would join
us, enjoying scratches and loves and snuggling. She even started sleeping
between us at night. The bed was her haven. She relaxed more and more over
the last few years.
In May she started losing weight. I took her to the vet and learned that her
kidneys and heart were failing. Within five days she died. I miss her quirky
personality so much. She made me laugh every day. She was the perfect
companion to Niles, our seventeen-year old. He still looks for her, too.
I am so glad I made the decision to bring her home. She enriched our lives
during her short life. Thank you for letting me share the story of our lovely
little kitty.
