These
two handsome fellows are known in our house as "The Boys". The handsome
one with gray stripes is Skamp and the adorable white one is Skittles. They
are brothers from another mother but arrived in our home at the same time.
They are both six years old and came to us from a local shelter.
My daughter and I were after just one kitten to add to our family after
losing our older cat, Ashley, to an illness. We still had Snickers who was
about six at the time but who came to us as an adult cat. My daughter
desperately wanted to have a kitten so we took off to our local no-kill
shelter. There were several kittens to choose from and my daughter fell in
love with one of two white brothers who were about seven weeks old. I, on the
other hand, was being called by a spunky fellow who kept pulling at my arm
thru the cage and talking to me. He was a very cute gray tabby with a white
belly who was about ten weeks old.
Needless to say, we left with two kittens instead of just one and it was the
best thing we could have done. (The other little white cat was being adopted
by a gentleman who was just waiting to see which of the two my daughter was
taking - so he wasn't left behind.)
"The boys" have been buddies since the start and it was great to have them be
able to play and entertain each other without pestering our older cat too
much. I think Snickers was very appreciative that they had each other so they
annoyed her much less. Both of our boys have grown into very lovable cats
with their own distinct personalities.
Skamp's name at the shelter was Vinnie and he is often referred to in our
home as "Vinnie the Skamp" or "The Gangster". He is our alpha-male for sure.
He always wants to be the center of attention and is quite demanding about it
at times. He pushes his way between you and the other cats if he feels he's
not getting enough love and attention. He also is our most vocal cat. We have
many conversations about who knows what. He also greets everyone who comes
over and expects to be patted and praised.
Skittles, on the other hand, is the sweetest, though slightly shy, little
brother who never knows what might be coming his way. One thing he does know
is that his favorite person is my daughter. When he is shut out of a room she
is in, he sits by the door and cries for her. He also is a chewer who likes
to gnaw on things like a puppy. We've lost more earphone wires, shower
curtain liners, window shades to the little teeth of Skittles. He hides when
visitors arrive until he is sure they are calm adults and then he ventures
out to see what's going on. Skittles doesn't meow much but he chirps and
trills like a bird.
Quirks and all they were wonderful additions to our family and we love them
both very much.
