I
love this kitty very much. Her proper name is Winona Arizona a.k.a.
Winona-binona, Scooter Toot, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Sweetie Peetie. She is
a storm chaser, an avid fan of Jeter Harris (hizself)
and quite a talker. She insists on her
hips being patted (hard) for long periods of time, and for weeks absolutely
refused to allow me to replace her collar (the Cat Turned Slippery Eel
moves) until I sat her down and assured her the old collar was the shelter
collar and she instead needed her Forever Home collar. She delights me.
Winona came to live with me when she was six years old. I don't know
anything about her early life, but when she was young she wound up at the
Arizona Animal Welfare League, a No Kill shelter in Phoenix founded by
Amanda Blake, "Miss Kitty" of Gunsmoke fame. Winona was adopted after a
year at the shelter, but was returned after several years; and there she
sat again at the shelter for another two years before I found her. I had
recently lost my cat of 20 years and when I saw her sad face on their
website and I decided I had to make her smile.
She moved with me to Texas several years ago and was a pro, not making a
peep from her carrier under the airplane seat in front of me.
The most unusual thing about Winona is that she is a storm chaser. Like
most cats, during the course of a day she will follow the sun from warm
spot to warm spot around the house, but she is just crazy about
thunderstorms. At the first sound of a thunder clap or sight of lightening
she will cry out happily and jump up to the nearest window sill demanding
to have the window opened wide. It's a good thing that I have tile floors
and plenty of towels because a closed window during a storm is just not an
option. She will happily lie on the window sill and get sprayed with warm
Texas rain as she watches the lightening and listens to the thunder.
I'm glad I brought home an older, quirky, cat to share my life with and am
grateful to all the shelters and shelter workers out there!
