Sam-I-Am,
also known as, Sam, is special because he came to me at a time I
really needed him. I was going through a major time of depression and had
given up on the world. I felt I had no reason to live and didn't care
anymore. My mom is allergic to cats and dogs but she noticed she had less of
a reaction to Manx cats for some reason unknown. So, seeing my interest in
cats, she told me if she could find a purebred male Manx kitten for free that
she would get him for me. She never thought this would happen, because Manx
kittens are very expensive cats and they're also pretty rare in the U.S.
However, two weeks later an orange purebred male Manx kitten showed up on a
website she browsed called "Freecycle". He was advertised as free to good
home as the woman who owned him had two other cats and a newborn child. My
mom sent the email included her phone number asking for him and waited. The
woman called to say the little kitten had already been spoken for. I was
completely crushed. Without me knowing my mom spoke with the woman explaining
my depression and how at only eleven years old I'd completely given up on life
and just didn't care anymore. That I needed something to live for. They hung
up the phone with me believing my one chance was gone and running outside to
try to find something to take my mind off it. Fifteen minutes after I'd left the
woman called back to tell my mom that the kitten was available again because
she'd told the other person that a little girl needed him more.
On October 31st, 2006 I came home from trick-or-treating to find a little pet
carrier in the middle of the floor. I was confused and opened the carrier. No
cat. Suddenly I heard a noise and looked over. Peering nervously from beneath
the couch was a very timid little orange kitten who has since become my best
friend. He's saved my life more than once because whenever I feel the urge to
just give up I think of him and know that if nothing else I need to be there
for him. He's a very clever cat as well. I've taught him many tricks such as
sit, stay, down, paw, high five, and more. He sleeps with me, he plays with
me, he even watches me as I do my chores or make something to eat. He's a bit
of a pain in the butt because he loves to chew on odd things like pencils and
pens... but only when I happen to be holding them! He's also a huge beggar!
If I have food that he wants he will sit there and droooool as he stares at
whatever I have. He's a great decorator as well. If something is on a table
he thinks would look nicer on the floor he's quick to fix the situation and
give the object a good swat onto the floor! No matter how big of a pain he
can be sometimes, I couldn't have asked for a better Halloween treat than my
now not-so-little Sam-I-Am.
