This
is Dude, his full name is "Procurlharem Yankee Dudecurl Dandy" and he is
a silver tabby and white American Curl cat, wishing everyone a Happy
Independence Day! A proud display of the American Curl spirit, "Dude" is
regal in every way, pledging his allegiance to all who come in contact with
him. The history of their breed shows why they are good, All-American
felines! Dude exudes the epitome of spirit, sparkling pride and deep
gratitude for the freedoms we all appreciate on this 4th of July 2013.
On a hot June day in 1981, a stray longhaired black female cat with "funny
ears" mooched a meal from Joe and Grace Ruga in Lakewood, California. She
moved in and they named her Shulamith, and she is the original American Curl
to which all bonafide pedigrees trace their origin. No one ever suspected
that from that single cat, and the birth of her kittens six months later, would
grow a worldwide debate about the genetics behind those unusual ears. When
selective breeding began in 1983, fanciers bred the American Curl with an eye
toward developing a show breed. In analyzing data on 81 litters - which
totaled 383 kittens - the renowned feline geneticist Roy Robinson of London,
England, confirmed that the ear-curling gene is "autosomal dominant." This
means any cat with even one copy of the gene will show the curled ears. In
the December 1989 Journal of Heredity, Robinson reported finding no defects
in any of the crosses he analyzed. This information provided the pathway for
a new and healthy breed, and one with a wonderful temperament.
In 1986, I (Caroline Scott of Procurl Harem in NYC), fell in
love with the spirit of the American Curl, and have been breeding and showing
them in CFA, as well as being constantly amused by their clown-like antics
and astounding intelligence! "Dude" is a CFA National Winner, and Breed
Winning Grand Champion, so the letters GC BW NW precede his name on official
paperwork, but he is still the same curly-eared shoulder rider he has always
been regardless of all the ribbons and trophies.
