Thea
is named after Dorothy Parker, a writer, critic, and satirist known and
celebrated for her wit and wisecracks. And while Thea can't type or hold a
pencil, she communicates her clever quips through high-pitched mews, mostly
delivered between 3 and 4 o'clock in the morning.
This is relatively new behavior. She never meowed - and I mean never - until
her brother, Oscar, passed away a year ago. Very sad for both of us. On a
positive note, this tragic event has given us a much greater appreciation for
each other.
For instance, I appreciate that she greets me at the door with the excitement
of a dog when I come home from work. She appreciates that I sacrifice my
supply of hairbands so she can chase, fetch, chew, and then discard them
under the armoire purely because it's fun. I appreciate that she is smart
enough to know that heat escapes from the head and therefore drapes herself
over my head every night in bed to ensure I don't freeze to death - even in
the height of summer. She appreciates that I include her in the recycling
effort by letting her lick the yogurt containers before they go in the bin. I
appreciate that she chooses the cheap ottoman rather than the expensive couch
to demonstrate the almighty destruction her claws are capable of inflicting.
She appreciates the glasses of water I leave around because a drinking out of
a bowl is oh-so-uncivilized.
So as you can see, it's a give and take relationship that Thea and I have.
And while we don't always see eye-to-eye on everything, I wouldn't trade her for the world!
