Three
years ago this week we had to euthanize our most beloved Ashanty, an
eleven-year-old Bengal, because of liver cancer. I received Ashanty as a
Christmas present from my sister, who took her over from Peru to Italy in
December 1999 and I drove her to Zurich, Switzerland, few days later: no
wonder why she hated travelling the rest of her life. She was an
international cat, not only because of the distance she travelled, but also
because of parents: her mother was from California and her father from
Argentina. She was stunningly beautiful and received second as Best in Show,
kitten category, in her first and last show: I realized she hated it and
never took her anymore (much to the disappointment of several breeders and
judges). She just wanted to stay home with us.
Ashanty was just three months old when she arrived home, and from day one she
took over the house; she was extremely talkative, attached to us and
extremely playful. She always stayed with us, on our lap, in our bed or just
next to us. She loved to play hide and seek, play football (with a ping pong
ball), play with her toys and loved to drink from the tap. She was the most
vocal cat I have ever seen; on returns from our journeys, she would talk to
us for hours. It was a very hard decision to euthanize her, and broke my/our
heart, nevertheless her condition had deteriorated so rapidly that there was
no other alternative. She remains in our heart as the "incredible" and
beautiful Ashanty who filled our days with laughter and love. Rest in peace,
Ashanty, you will always stay in our hearts.
