This
is Victoria a.k.a. "Tori." Tori has quite a story to tell. She was born
on the streets of Calgary in the early spring of 2002. She lived on the
streets the first year of her life, and like what happens to so many feral
cats, she became pregnant. She was found giving birth to kittens in a big
sports arena here, in an area called Victoria Park, hence her name, Victoria.
She and her kittens were humanely trapped and were brought to the MEOW
Foundation. Sadly all her kittens passed away within the first day. I was
told it could have been due to lack of nourishment for Tori while she was pregnant.
For her second year, Tori lived in the rafters of the safe area that she now
found herself in, not trusting anyone. I had just finished fostering a cat
and found myself in a position to help out again. Since I had four outgoing
cats at the time I said that I could foster a shy cat. Tori was chosen to be
that cat. She was with me for about a year with no one really showing an
interest in adopting her, so I decided that since she was now comfortable in
our home she would just stay. Tori has been with us for over nine years now,
and even after all that time we still cannot touch her. She is comfortable
enough with the other cats and dogs, but humans still scare her. She won't
run away from us anymore unless we come too close and try to pet her. We are
fine with that, she can just live safely in our home.
An interesting thing about Tori is that she is polydactyl on all of her feet.
That means that she has at least one extra toe on all of her feet. Her front
feet have two extra toes. It looks like she is walking around on baseball
gloves! Another cute thing is that Tori loves the canned food that she gets
as a treat and will stand on her hind legs when I am preparing it.
Tori is a special cat, and lucky that she was trapped when she was. Feral
cats generally live short lives because of all the dangers they face living
on the streets. Tori will live out her natural life safe and happy in our
home. We encourage you all to observe Feral Cat Day, which is every year on October 16th.
