My
wife and I have been married for almost 39 years and cats have been a
part of our lives from the very beginning. We started out with a pair of
Himalayans but every cat since has been a rescue. Spanky is our most
dearest foundling. We found him in the middle of the road, almost dead but
with just enough energy to get up and run down a nearby hole. My wife and
I dug him out and could not believe that this little ball of matted fur
was a kitten, or that it was still alive. He was very sick, had an eye
infection and smelled very bad! The vet estimated his age at five weeks and
only gave him a 50/50 chance of survival. He also thought he'd be blind in
the infected eye.
When we brought him home he ate everything in sight and we considered
changing his name to Hoover. He and a prior adoption, Charlie, became the
best of friends and were inseparable. The eye healed, he kept his sight,
but it was scarred. It never slowed him down, but once in the middle of
the night while playing tag with Charlie, he zigged when he should have
zagged and hit the door jam at full speed, WACK! Dazed kitty! Three weeks
after finding Spanky we found another "sewer" kitten. Autumn, a calico,
was in much better shape than Spanky had been and after a short
quarantine, and much love from her adoptive brother, she found her forever
home with two teenage girls. Spanky also got to "pay it forward" when he
helped us adopt our latest rescue, Zonker. Spanky left us way too early.
He was my wife's companion, sometime a nuisance, but always a joy.
