Lovey
came to me via the Town Lake Animal Shelter in Austin several
years ago. I wanted a cat with certain established personality traits:
friendly but not constantly needy; not a destroyer; uses the box every
time; gets along fine alone during the day; and who has a history of
tolerating other cats and other dogs.
Lovey was the most personable of the cats available the day I went to
the shelter, greeting every person that walked into the room. Her
beautiful blue eyes made a big impression on me; I once had two
chocolate-point Siamese cats with blue eyes whom I loved dearly.
According to her foster mother, Lovey delivered a litter of kittens
when she came into the shelter. She mothered them until they were
adopted. The foster household had both cats and dogs in it. She was
estimated to be 2 1/2 years at that time.
Lovey has been an absolute joy. I call her Queen of the Tabbies. She
loves to sit on the porch and laze in the sunshine each morning. In
the evening she sits on my lap and licks my hand while I pet her, then
she hops down and sits at my feet and cleans herself off. Her favorite
toy is a plain-old white tennis shoe lace a friend got her interested
in when she was cat- sitting Lovey while I traveled. I glued that shoe
string to a wooden dowel and made it a magic cat wand of fun!
Just don't scratch her back near her hips; she'll get a cat-crazy look
in her eyes and start gnashing her teeth; if you keep it up, she will
whip her head around to bite your hand! She will clamp down lightly
but she has never broken skin - well, maybe once. Just don't scratch
her back there and all is well!
