Mavis
has an alert, startled look on her face. That's what struck us first
when we were looking for a kitten to adopt and saw her at the SPCA here in
San Francisco. She has great coloring, a mix of black, caramel, grey and
white. One paw is black and one is tan. We quickly decided she was "IT." The
vet told us all tortoise-shells are female. She reminds me of a bat, an owl
and a monkey. She was affectionate with the SPCA staff and then with us. Her
loud purr starts easily. We could see she was confident and social, important
because we already have two full grown cats.
At our home, we kept Mavis in the bathroom the first few days. Napali and our
other cat, Mick, were extremely curious, sniffing under the door and looking
alarmed. We set up a window screen between Mavis and the hallway so all the
cats could see each other. Mavis puffed up her fur at the first sight of Mick
but that only lasted a moment. Mick is reserved but looks entertained by
Mavis. Napali and Mavis are active cats and immediately chased each other up
and down the climbing structures and under the furniture when they met.
They've calmed down over the last week and enjoy each other now, just as we
hoped they would.
