Jack
Jack, Jack Fruit, Jackson Brown, or Nutty is the true bomb diggity of
cats. I'm not just bragging because he's mine, either, as he shares the house
with multiple other cats, and though they are all loved, Jack is king. I
grabbed him along with a couple other feral kittens off the street around eight
or nine years ago, before I learned that doing so can leave you with way too
many cats! (Yes, the easily tamed can be adopted out, but too many never got
as friendly as I'd hoped or only liked me.) Jack was untouchable for a time,
and I had him in one room with a few others. I would lie on the sofa with a
book and my hand dangling down the side, and he'd brush by my fingers over
and over. About a week later, he jumped up on me. He immediately jumped down,
but you get the drift.
Fast forward to eight years later: there's nothing I can do to frighten or even
startle him. I often raise my arms and stomp toward him making monster
sounds, and he loves it. How do I know? He jumps onto one of several cat
condos or chairs and rolls around on his back meowing at me. He adores
attention from me. Then we head butt several times. We also have a thing
where I lift both of his back legs off the floor and thump them down about five
times - it's another favorite of his. When I spend time playing or talking to
another cat or dog, he races up meowing determinedly, demanding he be the
center of attention. It truly amazes me how social he is because I have quite
a few scaredy cats in the house who run from noise or visitors, even after
years of safety living here.
As no one is completely perfect, I'll add that Jack can be a bit of a pain
with some of the others. He gets in his moods and harasses those lower on the
totem pole, but as soon as I reprimand him, he'll go back to rolling on his
back. He absolutely knows he's beyond any serious reproach. He is the only
cat allowed in the bedroom at night with the two dogs and me. It may not be
fair, but I can't have running, hissing, meowing, and jumping on me all night
long. Jack adores the dogs and rubs against them before he lies down each
night. When he wants to leave the room, he jumps down and scratches the
mattress till I let him out. Five minutes later he's back, yowling at the
door. Occasionally he does this several times before I stop reading and turn
off the light, and I want to kill him, but again, he's beyond reproach in the
end. He is a genius and a gem beyond all words. My Jackie Brown!
