Bobo
was adopted as a kitten after his birth mom was rescued while pregnant
and living in a feral population. So, he was born at a rescue facility in
Georgia and thankfully not in the wild. It was love at first sight and we
immediately bonded. My husband, at the time of adoption, was unable to bond
due to an out-of-town business trip. So I spent all my time with Bobo and my
pug named Albert. There was a power struggle over my pug's bedding and toys
and there was even a period of time that both refused to budge - so both
squeezed in the pug's bed. They even napped together on less
passive-aggressive terms, but my pug remained wary that his bulging eyes
might not be there when he woke up.
Within a week, Bobo loved having his own house where he could run and
discover, day or night (we lived in a very large apartment with windows
everywhere and in the woods on the Chattahoochee River). So much to see...
chipmunks, deer, tons of songbirds, squirrels, coyotes, and raccoons that
climbed an adjacent pine tree to get a great look into our place. Bobo was so
excited and would make chattering noises since there was a glass divider from
him and his ability to act on his strong prey drive.
Once Bobo started to mature, he preferred my husband over me; despite the
fact I spent so much time with him and I played with him and cleaned his
litter box. Somehow we developed a strange relationship wherein he would
"tolerate" me unless I would give him treats. But the love for his dad became
so strong that I still feel slighted (enter sad face here). So our trade-off-
Bobo wanted me to be the one who plays rough and wants to remain my husband's
lovebug. He even went through a mean streak with me. For example he would
pretend to curl his tail around my legs and then out of no where he would
bite my toe and, another time by leaping off a sofa onto my stomach while I
was sleeping in my bed. While recuperating from the breath being knocked out
of me, he was purring, kneading and snuggling with my husband.
So, after close to two years of ownership, we've come to an understanding. He
is the alpha of our family, he is not resigned to compete with me for HIS
home and can't wait for me to return to working outside the house again. He
has even trained me to play with him odd hours of the night when he gets
bored (if I don't oblige, he then disturbs my sleep indefinitely or I'll feel
a wonderful slap across my face while sleeping). But, there are rare times
that he will sleep next to me and maybe even purr, but the second he sees my
eyes open he leaps off the bed.
He is a beautiful, intelligent cat and most definitely an athlete. He loves
his cat tower and can even climb down head-first from the very top. This
takes an enormous amount of strength and since he sharpens his nails on my
legs, he has strong claws for assistance. He can leap from abnormally high
heights and I have yet to get this on video, but I have witnesses. He knows
tricks and thus far he can "sit," "give a kiss," nd jump through a hoop-all
for treats and he is gone in a flash when you're done giving treats. He is
potty-trained on a human toilet and was taught to meow before he goes so I
can be there to flush. I decided that it wasn't hygienic for guests to share
with him, so when we moved we gave him his own litter box(s).
I guess what makes him so special is that he has that dual personality and
demands rough play with me and loves on my husband and is super gentle with
him. When we adopted Nemo, our German Shepard/Golden Retriever mix, Bobo in
no uncertain terms laid down the law. Bobo drinks first, then Nemo and
Albert! The dogs literally wait in line. Bobo takes his sweet time, without
any empathy for the dogs and their thirst after a long hot and humid walk in
Florida. Sometimes he will eat the dogs' food and they just walk away until
Bobo is finished. Bobo enjoys chasing bugs and when I have the windows open
he gets excited when he sees a gnat that creeps through the screens. He waits
for me to say 'get the bug' and goes crazy chasing them. He just is simply
the smartest cat I've ever owned and he can train anybody to do what he
wants. His ability to act different with different people and pets like a
chameleon, shows me how smart and adaptable he truly is. Everyone deserves a
Bobo in their lives!
