It
was December 2001, and I had decided, on impulse, to go down to the local
SPCA shelter and adopt a cat. There were so many that needed homes, and I
wished I could take them all, but of course I couldn't; so as I stood in the
middle of the room after having interacted with as many of the cats as I
could, trying to decide, a cat that I hadn't noticed before walked over to me
and looked up as if to say, "What about me?" I picked him up and he
immediately rested his head in the crook of my arm--decision made!
Based on his appearance, I initially thought Smokey was an adult, and the
people at the shelter had no information on his background or birth date. But
when we took him to the vet, we learned that he was only about seven months old.
Since then we have had almost fourteen years of great joy with Smokey as part of
our family, and we look forward to many more. He is sweet, smart, curious,
patient, loyal, affectionate, and sometimes amusing. And he's not a big fan
of change, so we try not to disrupt his routine if possible!
We are truly blessed to have Smokey in our lives.
