I
found Mushkin at the shelter nine months after my twenty-year-old Russian
Blue cat crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. In truth, Mushkin chose me! She
longingly reached out to me at the shelter and wouldn't let me go. Though shy
at first, she's blossomed into a confident and affectionate kitty.
Before I met her, she and her siblings and parents were all turned over to
animal control when their owner could not keep them. At first named Marlena,
I chose Mushkin because of her playfulness. And it really does match her personality.
Mushkin can retrieve tiny objects (like ping pong balls & plastic bottle
tops), leap up to the top of her six-foot (1.8m) cat tree, and especially loves
reaching for my camera strap. Friends tell me how beautiful she is, and I
always reply, "Both inside and out." It's absolutely true!
Mushkin's nickname is Miss Meow, because she's quite the talker! She already
seems to have quite a vocabulary, or perhaps we're just in sync. She seems to
enjoy music. When I pick up my guitar and sing or play my music box, she
always hangs around.
Walking into the Berkeley animal shelter that August day was indeed a
life-changing event for me. When her big paws reached out to me, I just knew
I'd be taking her home and providing her love and care. It was meant to be!
My Mushkin demands a lot of love and attention, but that's no problem
whatsoever. What's not to love? In fact, she won my heart with her first "meow."
