Meet marvelous Maverick, who celebrates his first birthday today! Maverick was a homeless, bottle-fed kitten that we adopted at age 19 weeks.
We saw him for adoption while out buying cat food for our calico Lily. It was six months after losing our beloved 14-year-old cat Chico to cancer.
We were not looking to replace him, but Maverick charmed us that day, and has already added an abundance of love and joy to our home.
He shares our home with Lily, a five-year old calico cat. Maverick and Lily sleep, eat, groom and cuddle together. He is the kitten that Lily never had, and she is the mother he never had.
At first, he appeared to be a dark striped tabby with white, but soon
sprouted long, silky fur with a pale beige undercoat on his sides and
tail. We think he has several Norwegian Forest cat traits. He is very
proud of his wide, fluffy tail that he holds erect as it floats like a
plume across the room. He also has a white ruff and full, white fluffy
britches. Our vet initially thought Maverick was polydactyl, but he just
has tufts of white fur poking from the toes of his oversized feet! His
expressive, heavily black-lined eyes would make "Captain Jack" jealous!
Maverick is an easygoing, personable cat that is heavily involved in
everything we do – we mean everything! He thinks his owners are the most
interesting people on earth! Maverick is never shy around new people.
Already, he sat in the cable guy's lap, and helped a plumber fix a leak.
He especially loves "happy hour" – he is adept at stealing human treats
from a tray – especially peanuts. Many times at night while we are
sleeping, he kneads his paws and cuddles to wake us up, then falls fast
asleep.
He plays constantly, catching toys in mid-air, fetching a black twist
tie repeatedly, and is particularly fond of his roller-ball toy. He also
loves water and "tests" the bowl with his front paw before drinking.
Maverick is a perpetual kitten ... and we are fortunate to share life
with him!
