Misty is one of our rescue cats. She was very trap shy and also quite feral, but she kept hanging around our neighborhood for about a year or so. We caught her once and thanks to my carelessness with a cage, she got away as we were taking her to the vet. She delivered we think one litter of kittens shortly thereafter. We noticed sometime later she was looking quite plump again.
To shorten the story just a bit, one morning one of our other rescue cats was standing on point on our screened in porch looking intently at a bed of Mexican petunias. We then heard a very faint mew, quite insistent, coming from the garden right at the foundation of the house. Misty had delivered 4 kittens there, she had them all cleaned up, but the noisy one was around the corner and lost. I was able to pick up all 4 kittens, as well as Misty with no trouble at all.
Misty has stayed with us since. She has prospered, and more than doubled her body weight (much to our chagrin). While she is still feral with strangers, she has become my best friend, demanding attention very frequently, spending hours on my lap helping with computing chores and the like. We ended up keeping one of her kittens, Portia, they are extremely well bonded, something we have not often seen in cat families between mothers and female offspring. Portia is about 50% larger than her mother, more the size of her father, who was another neighbor cat that we caught and had neutered shortly after this litter was delivered. Rescue cats are the best!
