I adopted Ernie nearly two years ago when I had to move from my home of 28 years and into a condo, due to my marriage ending. I had lost two of my four cats, one to renal failure and one to cancer. One of my two remaining boys was an outdoor cat and would have to go with my daughter to her new residence. That left my poor little Rodney as an only cat, and he is the type who needs a feline companion.
I was volunteering with a rescue group at the time, Action Volunteers for Animals, and told them I needed a friendly boy who got along well with other cats. I also said if they had any black cats they were having trouble adopting out, I would take one. They introduced my daughter and I to three lovely guys, but Ernie (Mick at the time) was just so laid back and gentle we knew he was the one for us! He was picked up at a feral colony, which is why his ear is clipped, but they soon discovered he was very tame and must have been dumped. One the way home we discussed names and Ernie was one of the options. When we got home my son had a look at him and without us saying a word, said he should be named Ernie. That did it - Ernie it was!
He is a 20-pound (9+ kg) gentle giant. He became like a big brother to Rodney right away; they groom each other and cuddle every day. I think condo life is quite boring for them, so I bought them a tall cat tower which they sit in daily and look down and a pathway below me. I could not have made the transition myself without these two dear boys and I look forward every day to going home and seeing them.
