One evening when we walked through the garden of our new home (about 11 years ago), we heard a tiny meow behind us, and there she was, a small tortie with crooked legs. She wouldn't leave, so I started feeding her and that was that. I couldn't make her an indoor kitty, because the house was already full with six cats. So the deck became her new home. She was already spayed, and I found out that she had kittens in the neighbors' basement, so they had her fixed. Her name then was Gabby. Apparently, she liked our place better!
She was about five years old when she adopted us. She never became a lap cat, but she would let me pet her, when I sat down. She was also very talkative in good tortie fashion. One day, about four years later, I saw her walk away, in the back of the yard, and she didn't come back until two months later, emaciated and weak. She had gone from a 10-pound kitty to five pounds.
To the vet she went, where X-rays showed several shot gun pellets along her spine, and she was anemic. She was hospitalized for several days, because it would have been impossible for me to administer medication at home.
I made her a new, warmer outdoor shelter, but unfortunately she never fully recovered. Her arthritis in her front legs made it almost impossible for her to walk, and another winter was approaching. So I made the heartbreaking decision to let her go. I sometimes still feel guilty, but I know she can now bask in the sun at the Rainbow Bridge without any pain. I love you, little, chatty Kylie!
