This is Jack Daniels, and no, I am not an alcoholic. I came across Jack when visiting my local animal shelter to actually try and adopt a dog. Luckily the dog I came to adopt was claimed by its owner who had lost him, so to make myself feel better I decided to visit the kitties! I was thinking all of the cages were locked, so it wouldn't be too difficult to just say hello then walk away. To my surprise all the cages were unlocked for you to open and hold the kitties. I first held a few kitties that were super cute, but easy enough to put back for other families. Then I got to a kitty's cage with the name, "Rhett." He was so vocal the entire time I was holding other kitties and when I opened his cage door he came running and attached himself to me by wrapping his paws around my neck and hugging me so tight!!! I melted instantly. He started soaking my shirt from all his drool and he was purring so loudly. I know they say you shouldn't spontaneously adopt an animal, but there was no way I was leaving this sweet boy to sit in a cage for any longer.
Jack came home with me that day and luckily my other kitty and he got along amazingly! Jack Daniels is so in tune with emotions anyone who comes over who was the slightest upset, he would hug and purr and drool all over them. Any time I was sad he would instantly make me feel better by hugging me. I thought that his sweet gift of love could help others too, and living in a town with loads of hospitals, recovery centers and assisted living centers I decided to take the leap to therapy certify my little man. He has yet to visit any centers because we are still in the certifying stage, but I know one day he will make many many people happy just like he has me.
Although Jack is the most amazing kitty I could ever imagine, the main reason I decided to honor him was to raise awareness for black cats. Black cats are amongst the most overlooked cats, simply because of the lie that they are "unlucky". My Jack is as lucky, sweet, loving, cute, amazing as any other color kitty and I truly wish to change the stereotype of black cats. I couldn't imagine my life without my sweet boy and I am so thankful I walked into the kitty room that day.
