Romeo came into our lives October 2012. Two months prior, we had to put our 19-year-old male tuxedo to sleep, due to multiple worsening related illnesses. Our 10-year-old tabby, Nina, seemed depressed and we all missed Mali. So I contacted Mary, a wonderful shelter volunteer, to help us. She felt my husband should also have a choice for our new arrival, however he is homebound. Several evenings later, she and a friend arrived at out home with four cats in carriers. I wanted them all. However, of course this was not possible.
The first was Boo Boo, an all white petite beautiful female cat. She exited the carrying case, walked around, had a snack of dry food from Nina's dish and looked completely at the home. I thought, "This is the one," until Mary mentioned she was returned by her previous owners due to allergies. Since I have asthma, I had to be cautious and did not want her to be returned a second time. The next was a female tuxedo. We felt, it would not be fair to compare her to our previous tuxedo Mali. The third kitty was a pretty calico, but my husband was not fond of calicos, although I believe they are beautiful. Last was my precious Romeo, a handsome tabby.
We chose Romeo because Mary said he was a sweet, gentle cat and we did not want Nina to be stressed in any way. He ultimately bonded well with Nina; he was timid and hid under the bed for two weeks. We set him up with food, water, kitty litter, and more until finally gentle coaxing and patience paid off. Romeo has been the most affectionate cat imaginable. Although he is on a special diet, he is lively and alert, playful and loving. He enjoys watching the birds and squirrels at our feeder and frequently sits by our kitchen looking at the garden.
His one major quirk is hunting for socks, which we find in various areas of our floor. We don't know much about his early life, except he was rescued from a hoarder's house until ultimately placed in Pet Smart. Romeo brings us much joy in his forever home and we all love him.
