| Born and rescued in the Middle East, Maitri was officially adopted by me in 2012 (I was living and working there for a year). "Maitri" is a sanskrit word meaning unconditional loving kindness, and she fits that to a tee. Slender and white, soft as can be, she is also deaf. She makes up for that with her meowing, possessing a full range of sounds and volumes. She's curious, friendly, and connected. And she makes me laugh every day with her antics. She inspired me to write this poem:

 I adopted a kitty - named Maitri
A sweet little white ball of fur
 Unconditional loving kindness
Is what I had in mind for her

Her eyes, one blue and one hazel
Search my eyes and connect, so I think
 With deep concentration she watches
Then pokes mine before I can blink

I'm sad as I think of her deafness
She'll never know to come when I call
Yet now as I cry in my grief-ness
She appears, loving kindness and all

 Her playfulness-goofiness delight me
It's so good to laugh out loud
Her softness and tinyness quiet me
 She's Maitri, loving kindness avowed
