Spenser was a stray who showed up at my former residence and wormed his way into my heart. It was fall and I was planting bulbs in the yard and he would come and get in my lap! Which was counter-productive to bulb planting but assured him of adoption. He was the sweetest-tempered cat I ever met and he got along with my then-fourteen year old male and later with two tortie kittens.
Spenser had his share of adventures and misadventures: he was caught twice in humane traps that apartment owners near me had baited for raccoons. He apparently fell into a neighbor's six-foot-deep window well and had to be rescued. He somehow tore his cranial cruciate ligament (ACL equivalent in cats) and had to have it repaired. And of course he was a mighty hunter during his heyday and enjoyed leaving me presents of parts of mice, voles, bunnies, and birds. Yum!
In more recent years, he mellowed but still enjoyed basking in the sun and surveying his domain. He even tolerated a young whippersnapper neighbor cat who decided he would rather live at my house and spent lots of time on my porch. Spenser had a long, full life and was loved by many. He'll be missed.
