I first met Charlie when I was going to college in Columbus, Ohio. It was February, there was close to a foot of snow on the ground, and the temperature was in the teens. Charlie was hiding out in a horse barn to keep out of the cold, and I could tell when I looked at him that he was gravely injured. He was severely emaciated, and worst of all, had a large infected wound that covered most of his right side. I knew I couldn't leave him to die in the cold, so I walked up to him in hopes of grabbing him and taking him to the vet. I knew it might be a difficult battle trying to catch him, as he may have had no previous contact with humans, so I crouched down next to him and held out my hand to see if he would come to me. Not only did he come to me, but he climbed into my lap and licked me right in the face!
I was able to take Charlie to a local vet, where they cleaned his wound and treated him for various parasites, but the vet told me he may not survive his injuries.
All of this is now ancient history. The skinny and injured homeless cat of the past is now our gorgeous and healthy (and completely healed!) Charlie, full of life and love. His favorite hobbies include playing with his many toys, eating, headbutting and kissing everyone he meets, eating, cuddling, and did I mention eating? Charlie is a wonderful example of the rewards of reaching out your hand to someone in need, and now we can't imagine our family without him.
