On a whim in 2009 I stopped at a car in a grocery store parking lot with a sign that said "free kittens." My husband and I had not discussed getting a pet but I felt something pulling me toward the trunk of that car. I know now that Atticus was pulling at my heart.
We don't know his exact story, but we do know that he was either born missing paw pads and toes on his front paws, or they were chewed off by his mother during a difficult delivery. The young woman who was giving away the kittens had him separated from his siblings and pulled him out of the car when she saw me approach. She said she felt like he needed a special home and that we were those special people. The tiny runt kitten with mutated front paws snuggled into my arms and I knew immediately he was meant for our family.
Atticus would never let you know that he's different. Besides having a slightly lopsided gait and one arm he puts very little weight on you might assume he's "normal" and he prefers it that way. Instead of focusing on his "flaws" we have always focused on his uniqueness. On his right paw he gives a constant thumbs up due to a toe misplaced. And on his left he appears to wear a clown shoe because he essentially walks on his elbow for lack of a proper foot. He is charming in all his oddities and more wonderful than we could ever imagine. He not only gets along with our daughter, but watches over her. He is our son and he is our friend. And I think he was born perfect just the way he is.
