Our Maia was born to a feral mama behind a deli on a very busy road. She was the runt of her litter and her siblings would not let her eat. My friend was taking care of mama and the family and asked us to please adopt her. We trapped her one day with the enticement of bacon and brought her directly to the vet. She was in excellent shape but was also feral. We brought her home and little by little she became ours and was always "the baby."
As you can see she was absolutely gorgeous! She was always afraid of other people and would hide when we had friends or family over. She loved looking out our front window and snoozing the day away. She was always a "daddy's girl" and the minute he sat down to watch TV Maia would leave me and go to him. She loved sitting in our laps. Every year on her birthday we had tuna parties with people-food tuna for dinner. The years just flew by.
As she aged, her hearing started to diminish and she was becoming more and more confused. We finally had to take her to the vet the day after Easter this year as she stopped eating and we knew something was wrong. It turned out Maia had a mass in her belly. We decided, at 19 years of age, that we would put her to sleep right there and then. We held her in our arms, told her how much we would miss her, and how much we loved her. She passed away very peacefully. There will never be another Maia for us as she was so very special. We will see you again our little Mookie. Until that day, run like the wind.
