Nina and Sam the Domestic Longhairs, the Cat of the Day
Name: Nina, Sam
Age: Five years old
Gender: Female, Male
Kind: Domestic Longhair
Home: Galisteo, New Mexico, USA

Fluffy siblings Nina and Sam met us at Feline and Friends Rescue in Santa Fe when they were only one month old. They spent another two weeks at the shelter with their mother and then joined our family.

They have a great talent for shedding. I wish I could convert all the fur balls on the floor and on my clothing into a luxurious coat.

Their favorite pastimes are dining, sleeping under the covers with a human and glaring through the windows at road runners (desert birds) who meander outside the house.

After losing my Maine Coon five years ago, I very much wanted another orange long haired cat. My husband protested, "No. We already have two cats." But then I saw in the local newspaper that an orange long haired cat at the Feline and Friends shelter needed a home. She couldn't be adopted yet because she had just given birth to kittens.

When my husband and I went to see her, we met the kittens as well, and fell in love with all of them. As we left, my husband suggested that it would be better to adopt a kitten because we had two adult cats.

In the litter was one orange cat that crawled up on his shoulder and one white fluffball that I liked. My husband was adamant about only adopting one kitten, but nevertheless two weeks later, when they were weaned and I returned to pick up my kitten, I could not make up my mind between the two of them and naturally came home with both. When my husband greeted me as I held the two adorable kittens, I asked him which we should return, Nina or Sam (the names of his two young grandchildren.) Need I say more?

Sam is outgoing, affectionate, friendly, curious. He is very macho: the other cats get out of his way and let him eat first. He loves to sit on the chair, couch or headboard behind me looking over my shoulder when I read. He knows he's handsome.

His most endearing and unusual activity: in the middle of every night he jumps on the bed and claws at the sheet near my head until I lift the covers so he can crawl underneath, burying himself deep under the blankets, snuggling up to me for the entire night. I can not figure out how he can possibly breathe! He can perfectly well find his way under the bedsheets but he insists that I raise the covers for him.

Somewhat more shy and reserved, Nina is very ladylike. She knows she's a princess. If I sit on a chair to read, she drapes herself across my lap. If I'm reading while lying down, however, and only when I'm reading she spreads herself on my chest, knocking my reading material out of my hand, and rolls over onto her back for a tummy rub, at which time she goes into ecstasy, closing her eyes and purring as if lost in a dream.
