When my son was serving with the Peace Corps in South Africa, he found a small kitten near a broken window in a school and left it with the vet for a week, while he traveled . Andrus had been found alone in a shopping center and brought to the vet where he bonded with Una.
Before coming home to Florida, my son sent the cats to me. Andrus grew to be an extremely large long very gentle guy. He was affectionate but really too big to cuddle. He would lie on my son's chest but I found out to be very uncomfortable. Andrus learned just to put his front paws on me and show his love that way.
His long athletic body could jump from a chair to a plant shelf, a straight up distance of at least six feet. He was calm. During storms the other two cats in the house would hide under a bed but Andrus wasn't bothered.
Because of his size, he was cramped in my small house and needed more exercise than he could get inside. I prefer to keep my cats indoors but I would let him out for short periods of time when I was home. If he couldn't go out, he would pace and howl. The day before Hurricane Michael, I let him out and later couldn't find him. I had never seen him go near the road but that day the road was busy with evacuees and my sweet cat was hit and killed. I so badly wish I could do that day over.
We will always love and remember him.
