Delilah, or D-cat (or just plain "D") is a Reno Humane Society cat. I was browsing the kitties there, just looking, and she was howling up a storm, demanding to be let out. A week later, I went back to pick a cat, and she was still there, still yowling. I looked at a lot of nice cats but somehow was drawn to this noisy kitty, so home she came.
It was immediately obvious that she had been abused - when I so much as raised my hand, she would cringe. Whoever had her before had also had her front paws declawed, making her pretty helpless before my alpha cat Mollie, who had zero interest in welcoming this strange cat into her domain. So, she kind of slunk around, afraid of everything. But, she eventually realized that she wasn't going to get hit, would, in fact, get loved. She realized that Mollie was easily avoided. And she started to come out of her shell. Helping with this was the arrival of two nine-month-old cat sisters, who she immediately adopted, washing them and loving on them. This changed the population dynamics, because now she was part of a team of three, instead of being one-on-one against Mollie.
It is now coming up on three years later, and she is a purring, loving cat who loves to sunbathe, has become a lap cat, and gives me head washes every night. She hasn't won over Mollie - Mollie doesn't believe in such sentimental nonsense—and the cat sisters have matured into strong-minded individuals, but she is a full-fledged normal assertive cat, who plays with the other cats, has commandeered a futon as her very own, and knows that she is safe and loved.
