My
name is Gizmo. I appeared one day in my human parent's neighborhood
in November of 1999. I lived outside in the New England woods for two
years. My Mamma and Papa saw me outside when I was little and very
skinny, and began feeding me. I would walk through the rain or snow
each day and night to their front door and get my dinner. I wouldn't
let anyone touch me, and I would run away if anyone or anything
approached me. My parents worked with me to earn my trust daily, and
were very patient with me because I was afraid. They also put flyers
all over the neighborhood, and at every house, but no one knew who I
was.
One day in November of 2001, I showed up with a giant cut and
abscess on my right eye. It looked really awful, and I couldn't see out
of it. My Mamma and Papa decided it was time to put out the Have-a-Hart
to catch me, and bring me to the Vet. It took eight long days for
me to finally cooperate and walk into the trap, while my eye looked
worse every day. My parents sprang into action and took me to the
emergency clinic, where I was fixed, and my eye was cleaned, and I was
given medicine for my abscess. I had to be put in quarantine for six
months, because of my injury, but my parents agreed, and happily took me
home. They made a wonderful and safe room all ready for me with a TV,
and radio, and bed, and all the toys and food I could want.
I healed really well, and very quickly. Best of all was my old green
armchair that I loved to sit on. My parents kept a written kitty log on
me to measure my progress. Over time, I became friendlier and less
scared of people, and soon I played with my new human parents every
night. I got a lot bigger, and very healthy. My quarantine was long,
but I finally got my rabies certificate, and a big party too! Today I am
very healthy, and I live in a brand new big happy house, where I run
around and play, and chase, and sleep, and stretch, and hide, and sing
in every room. I also have another cat, who lives with me and is my
friend. Her name is Sofi.
She is bossy, but she loves me so, and loves to play chase up and down
the stairs with me. She is adopted too. I am happy and safe and warm,
and am glad that someone took the time, and had the patience to rescue
and love me.
